Cette soirée sera placée sous le signe du Funk, une fois n'est pas coutume, avec la présence exceptionnelle de l'un des groupes phares des années 80, le groupe fondé par Jamie Starr aka Prince Roger Nelson, The Time avec le toujours coquet Morris Day et Flyte Tyme.

Ils seront donc présents sur la scène des Soul Train Awards mais sous leur nouveau nom, The Original 7Ven.

The Time, pardon The Original 7Ven, ne seront pas les seuls à fouler la scène du Fox Theatre ce soir là puisque Natalie Cole, Kenny Latimore, Jill Scott, Joe, Mindless Behavior, Robin Thicke, Keith Sweat, Lloyd, Miguel, Melanie Fiona, BeBe Winans et Lalah Hathaway sont également prévu pour "hit the stage".
